What We're Doing

We work together to continually develop and implement sustainable solutions at the University of Houston. We call these programs and policies Green Thread as they weave throughout our business operations every day! Here are just a few of the ways we strive every day to make our campus a greener, more environmentally friendly place.

Check Local Purchasing: Did you know Dining Services sources food from many local farmers, growers and distributors? The list changes throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability. However, here is a sampling of a few of our partners:
  • Theiss Farms: Spring, TX
  • Gundermann Farms: El Campo, TX
  • Stahman Farms: Waller, TX

Check Recycling: Dining Services partners with campus to recycle paper, cardboard and plastic from all dining locations across campus. We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint. Look for signs in our locations for information on where to put your recyclables.

Check Trayless Dining:  Did you know Dining Services has been trayless since 2010? By dining trayless, you have helped positively impact the waste stream. Dining trayless minimizes food waste, conserves energy and water, and reduces the amount of cleaning chemicals entering the waste stream.

Reusable To-Go Containers: Getting your meal to go from one of the residential restaurants? Take part in our Reusable To-Go Container program. Here’s how it works:

  1. Pay a $5 refundable deposit and receive to-go container.
  2. Use container to take food from a residential restaurant.
  3. Bring used container back to either residential restaurant or any convenience store in exchange for a new container or key tag.
  4. If received key tag, bring tag to either residential restaurant to exchange for a new container.
  5. If at any time you would like a deposit refund, bring your used container or key tag to the cashier at either residential restaurant and ask for a deposit refund.

Check Fryer Oil Recycling: One hundred percent of dining services used fryer oil is recycled by Quest Recycling to be used for fuel.

Check Recycled Content Paper: We use 50% recycled content office and copy paper in all dining locations on campus.

Check Green Cleaning: All dining locations are committed to using Ecolab daily green cleaning products in our operations to reduce the need for chemical based cleaning products and provide a healthy and safe learning environment.

Check
